Portrait Series
Shanghai, China
2012 - 2014
The “Portrait” series was composed in the early 2000s, during time spent in Shanghai. Inspired by a desire to bring awareness to the stories of China and its people with the world, it features well-known Chinese media figures including athletes, filmmakers and performance artists. Each portrait embodies the making of art using unconventional materials, such as basketballs, socks, pins, bamboo chopsticks and coffee cups. In China, the manufacturing capital of the world, such everyday objects are largely affordable and sold in bulk, opening up greater possibilities for creative experimentation in art.
