The Lady
Sabah, Malaysia
2013
This portrait was created in 2013, as a tribute to Burmese political figure Aung San Suu Kyi. It features freshly cut carnations coloured with red food dye, and arranged in delicate cups to create a visually arresting silhouette of the subject’s face, which expresses calmness and poise. Over the years, the portrait’s symbolism has taken on a much more complicated, layered and nuanced meaning, given the controversial events surrounding the Rohingya crisis in 2015.
